We held our annual Open House Event on March 21st 2015 from 9AM - 12PM! People literally pulled off the side of the road and came in for tours and questions. One of the objectives of our organization is to educate and inspire the growth of organic gardening in the community and that's exactly what happened on Saturday at the Open House.
Everyone had a wonderful time showing off their plants and sharing knowledge. Children were taught how different seeds look and feel depending upon the plant and even got to plant some of them and take them home to nurture and grow. Visitors at the Open House were able to check out some worms from Gator's worm farm, including the red wrigglers, which was a kid favorite. We would like to say a BIG thanks to Whitwam Organics for providing plants, seeds and organic materials for sale! We look forward to seeing you at next year's Open House in 2016!
Thank you to all of the OOCG members who worked so hard to share another wonderful donation for Oldsmar Cares. We estimated it was a good 6 pounds of freshly picked organic produce!
Watch for information about the Oldsmar Organic Community Garden's 4th Annual Open House scheduled for Saturday, November 11, 2017 - mark your calendars!
In December, the Oldsmar Organic Community Garden (OOCG) hosted a composting workshop for fourth grade students at Espiritu Santo Catholic School. Through a grant from Simply Organic 1%, volunteers from OOCG prepared educational materials and spent time with the students demonstrating how to make healthy soil for an organic garden through composting. The fourth grade students will create their own compost for the Laura Beach Giving Garden at Espiritu Santo Catholic Church & School by collecting compostable scraps from school lunches (including leftovers from our lunch provider, Saltwater Catering) and then processing the scraps through the composting system built for them by the OOCG! Click here to watch the video on YouTube.
Our most recent harvest for Oldsmar Cares took place on April 15th and included 29 lbs of parsnips, carrots, broccoli, onions, garlic and herbs!
Construction of new walk way is under way! The walkway will make the garden more accessible to members and the community. The OOCG is a non profit organization that is made successful by contributions, grants, sponsorships and donations. We are very excited to announce the Oldsmar Organic Community Garden established 501c3 (non-profit) status. Please stay tuned to see what doors this status will open for the garden to make it an even bigger asset to the community!
Today was a wonderful day for harvesting and donating back to our community. Produce from the picture below was donated to Oldsmar Cares. We gave lots of delicious sweet potatoes, some snap peas, carrots, beets, radishes, and a diakon. A big thanks to Dianne Moore for making this happen!
